2 sauces - 1 for sushi and 1 for sashimi
I am officially 1 year older today! BAH HA HA!!! Oh well...Babs took me to Masuya for my early birthday dinner. The food tasted so sooo good, quality was exceptional, the price was reasonable and service was not too bad either. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Nasu Miso (fried eggplant with miso sauce) $5.80 (R)
The Nasu Miso is fried eggplant with miso sauce. The eggplant was fried well, with its skin tight and crispy, not too oily..and soft in the middle...and it was extremely moorish with the miso sauce! It's an excellent side dish to start with. It comes in Regular and Large size. We only ordered the regular size so we could eat other dishes.
Bluefin Tuna Oo-Toro sushi (tuna belly) $8.50 each
Masuya is having a Tuna promotion from July 23-30. So we ordered the bluefin tuna oo-toro (tuna belly) sushi to try out the tuna offering. Look at the fat on the tuna belly!! I have never eaten such fatty tuna..it's usually the salmon that's fatty! The texture was slightly chewy due to the fat, but the fish was sliced so thinly that it was easy to chew. The flavour wasn't fishy at all, in fact the eating experience reminded me of eating raw beef - as in carpaccio but without the lemon juice. Interesting experience!
Tasmanian Uni sushi (sea-urchin sushi) $5.50 each
The Tassie Uni sushi was so freshh and creamy. Not a hint of "unfresh seafood smell". DELIGHTFUL on the palate :)
Sashimi Deluxe $32.80
The Sashimi Deluxe platter was awesome. 5 types of fish, scallop and scampi. YUMMY!
Wagyu Beef Miso (sirloin marble 6) $32.80
OK..now to the serious stuff....when the wagyu beef was served, both Babs and I immediately dugged in and had totally forgotten to snap photos! We had to sort of re-arrange the meat to snap a few quick photos - we couldnt resist eating the beef!! Therefore, I only have 2 shots of this dish and both are not that great. The beef was cooked to perfection as per our order of medium rare (too bad no photos of it..it's all in our tummies!). The beef literally melted in our mouths! The thickness of the meat was just right, about an inch thick, enough to retain the juices and flavour! The special house miso paste sauce was so sooo mooorish and went really well with the beef.
Crumbed Hokkaido Scallops $24.80
While eating the wagyu beef, our eyes were also set on the hokkaido scallops, wondering if the scallops were that huge, or it was because of the thick crumbing. I took a bite, and my oh my..the scallop meat was so tender and juicy, and the crumbing was thin, light and crunchy. And YES, the scallops are GINORMOUS!!! It took about 3-4 bites to finish eating 1 scallop! Between the 2 of us, we ate all the 6 scallops, afterwhich we were so stuffed - any thoughts of ordering additional food were totally wiped out! HE HE HE (we wanted to order more!)
Sake ice-cream with plum jelly $6.80
Tofu & creamcheese cake $6.80
For dessert, we ordered the sake ice cream with plum jelly and tofu & creamcheese cake. The sake ice cream was delish! The sake flavour was strong but not over powering. It went really well with the semi sweet semi sour soft plum jelly. It's definitely an interesting dessert - my first time and definitely wont be my last! :) The tofu & creamcheese cake looks so boring and plain, but when it touches your tongue, the soft creamy texture is OOooLLAAAAALAAAAA!!!! I hardly tasted any tofu flavour, it's sort of a mild asian creamcheese cake - the creamcheese on top with a thin layer of sponge cake at the bottom.
For drinks, we just ordered hot green tea. Total bill came up to $141.80. Extremely satisfying meal, couldn't have asked for a better birthday dinner. Masuya, you have really outdone yourself! Babs - muacks!! :))
